Doctoral level studies

Doctoral studies in Sweden can be equated with working for a university, meaning that the student will receive a salary for the duration of the planned research period. You can visit the information pages that KTH , Uppsala  and Chalmers  have put together for those curious about what to to expect from doctoral studies in Sweden.

All available doctoral student positions are announced by respective universities well in advance so that best candidate for each position can be selected. The recruiting process is similar to applying for a job. Publicly announcing the positions is also a requirement for Swedish universities. You can search for announced doctoral student positions at Chalmers,   KTH  and Uppsala.

In most cases, the research topic has already been developed by leading researchers of the respective university before a position is announced. However, MSc students who are keen on doing research on a specific topic are always encouraged to pitch their ideas to leading researchers in the field. This way new ideas can be brought to research groups, which can potentially lead to opening new research positions.

Aside from research, doctoral students' development programme usually includes having to take courses like e.g. the GRE@T-PIONEeR  courses or self-paced courses  developed by Chalmers.
